課程概述

This course is designed to provide an overview on how social systems and polices affect the distribution of health across social stratum and populations, and how and what collective actions have been initiated over the course of public health history to ensure health equity. The course is divided into two parts. In the first part, we will review theories, evidences and controversies concerning the causes of social inequalities in health, as well as different policy approaches in tackling these issues. In the second part, public actions undertaken domestically and globally for the improvement of population health will be discussed. Topics of social determinants of health to be addressed include child development, living conditions, employment relations and work conditions, health care systems, food production systems, public financing and political participation.
本課程旨在探討不同社會階層與人口族群的健康分佈,如何受到社會制度與政策設計的影響;我們並從公衛發展過程,檢視什麼樣的集體行動被發展,如何被發展,以提升人口健康、促進健康平等。本課程分為兩大部分。第一部份,我們將探討健康不平等成因的理論、實證與相關爭議,以及因應健康不平等的不同政策路徑。在第二部份,我們將就一些主題,討論台灣與國際間的政策經驗,包括:兒童發展、居住環境、勞雇關係與工作狀況、健康照顧制度、食品產銷制度、公共財政,以及與政治參與。 

課程目標
At the end of this course students should be able:
1.to identify causal pathways linking policy-level social determinants to population health and health inequalities;
2.to describe social actions and movements for improving population health and eliminating social inequalities in health; and
3.to formulate intervention strategies for achieving health equity. 
課程要求
Students are expected to read assigned readings and prepare a short critique (1 page) prior to every class, and to participate in course discussion. At the end of the semester, students are expected to submit a term paper (<8 pages; details will be announced later) which can be a team work of 2-3 persons. Students will be graded according to his/her performance in short critique (30%), class discussion (20%), and term paper (50%).
